Bridegroom of blood

Here is a passage that has confused commentators to no end:Exodus 2:24-26.Ehrlich notes that hatan in Arabic means cut, circumcise.now the passage begins to make sense.Moses failed to circumcise his son.YHVH meets him on the way and seeks to kill him.Since Moses is being attacked,Zipporah performs the circumcision and says bridegroom of blood."Bridegroom"in the sense of circumcised one. Father-in-law in Hebrew is Hoten, i.e. the present participle of to circumcise. He must have performed the operation as a pre-nuptial rite.Ehrlich says the blood indicates the violence being done to Moses.See also Genesis 34:14 where Jacob's sons insist on the rite for Hamor to marry Dinah.Ehrlich says she repeated the words "bridegroom of blood"only and the rest "regarding circumcision"is a marginal gloss that got in the text.I think the whole phrase is a gloss beginning with "she then said ..."Now he solves also with the same root a difficult problem in I Samuel 18:21.Saul says you can be hatan(reflexive verb) in two ways right now.He will be related by marriage and my circumciser of the Philistines. What an exegete!

all is forgiven

here is Ibn Boded take on Genesis 4:1.the man referred in the verse is not the infant.Ehrlich contends that the Hebrew word ish is not used in the Bible for an infant. The passage in Job 3:3 is a different word.Compare the words of Leah in Genesis 29:32"Now my husband will love me"regarding Reuben's birth as first born. Why ish instead of ishi(Husband instead of My husband)?Adam was the only man in the world so there can be not need to denote him as My.She also felt that in bearing a son she was forgiven by God.Compare Numbers 5:27 where the suspect wife is spared the bad effects of the bitter waters if she was faithful to her husband and is able to retain seed. She also wins the favor of God.So understand the verse to say "I have won the favor of God and Adam."

Ibn boded moment

Here is an interesting interpretation by Arnold B. Ehrlich. In Genesis 49:16:Dan shall govern his people as one of the tribes of Israel. In Hebrew Dan yadin.Ibn Boded (I like using his nom de plume)points out this is not blessing or praise. The root in Hebrew in many places is used for avenging. Also he considers the vocalization in MT incorrect. As one of the tribes (k'ahad change it to k'ehad). Now translate"Dan shall avenge the tribes of Israel as one man.Let Dan be a serpent by the road,a viper by the path, that bites the horse's heels so that the rider is thrown backward."Much more vigorous and the begining jibes better with the last part.

ibn boded

Ibn Boded is the last name under which Arnold B. Ehrlich wrote his Hebrew commentary on the Hebrew Bible. In full, the complete nom de plume is Shabbetai ben Yomtov ibn Boded.I have just started trying to read it and it is worth the effort to trudge through the Hebrew.Ibn Boded means Son of Solitary.from time to time I will add insights or ask questions of Bob prompted by his thoughts.Check his Wikipedia entry for his bio and links to his Hebrew commentary
